We know gay people exist, but I am not buying this intentional 'addition'.

It's interesting how the show validates the fact that not everyone is suffering in Africa. Thanks heavens for the show, and it's shown in primetime at leats, not at 2am or 3am. :-)MIghTy Africanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09052671185056191270noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4957153574047966177.post-70732739516953567722009-10-14T13:58:16.269-07:002009-10-14T13:58:16.269-07:00I love this show so much!

As if the homo makes the show better, gee whiz, only americans! BTW, I am american, lol.
IT's good to see another side of Africa. It tells others that they too live a normal life and it's not always poverty that is shown on tv.Lady Ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04034077237964160933noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4957153574047966177.post-35197764900449966492009-10-13T13:00:30.255-07:002009-10-13T13:00:30.255-07:00I should have probably watched all episodes before...I should have probably watched all episodes before this blog entry. In a later episode, we see how black Zimbabweans are discriminated against. This xenophobia thing is something we must discuss properly. The news of the xenophobia in South Africa is not too long ago.
The song she was singing featured some clicks, dunno which languages it was in.MIghTy Africanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09052671185056191270noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4957153574047966177.post-60092797763701958292009-10-13T11:47:57.696-07:002009-10-13T11:47:57.696-07:00Very interesting overview of the series. I'm extra jealous that I don't have access to it in GH since I have read 3 of the books and my parents did spend some years in Botswana. Plus I'm quite the Idris Elba fan(atic).
I pray Jill Scot was not clicking away to any song that was supposed to be in SeTswana since there is not a single click in SeTswana/ SeSotho/SePedi. The portrayal of a Nigerian dentist as dodgy is disappointing. Unfortunately there is quite a bit of xenophobia directed towards West Africans in Botswana since a few very bad nuts have given us all a bad name. However, it is quizzical that the author would reinforce this negative stereotype...Interestingly, it is only (Black) Zimbabweans who get worse flack in Botswana than West Africans.Abena Serwaahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05888021677219851484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4957153574047966177.post-56983368599250560402009-10-13T02:35:59.062-07:002009-10-13T02:35:59.062-07:00I am yet to finish watching all the episodes. Props to the producers and everyone involved, but still not impressed with the demonisation of NigeriansMIghTy Africanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09052671185056191270noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4957153574047966177.post-1030822011870341852009-10-13T02:27:51.676-07:002009-10-13T02:27:51.676-07:00They showed the entire series here in the UK earli...They showed the entire series here in the UK earlier this year and I believe it was very well received. It's a typical BBC Sunday night production- inoffensive fare for the family, just like an Austen adaptation. I really enjoyed it.

I also didn't understand the inclusion of the BK character since he's not in the books, however the dodgy Nigerian dentist(s) is in the books. So perhaps the demonisation of Nigerians should be taken up with McCall-Smith.

The series was highly anticipated here because it was Anthony Minghella's last film before he died suddenly. He's a hugely respected director here and he's done some big films (The talented Mr. Ripley, The English Patient, Cold Mountain etc.). I think he did a great job. The acting was really good too imho. I forgot I was watching American actors and the non-Americans were also exceptional.Sankofahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15747229111296889760noreply@blogger.com
