The 5 top songs from Ghana, ever! #MusicWeDeyFeel
I have been meaning to do this blog post but my last few weekends have either been out & about (you can guess for what reasons), restful (important right?) and chillaxing (tres imporant aussi). The weekend that just passed was the one that included the 25th Ghana Music Awards. "If I add Telecel, I would get money? Okay". The Telecel Ghana Music Awards - 2024 edition - was at the Grand Arena at the International Conference Centre. I would have loved to go, but some weekends eh, when I get home on Friday, I do not leave my house till Monday morning. Yes, the Ghana Music Awards was sponsored by Vodafone for many years. More money right? Anyway, we have been talking about Ghanaian music these last few days, so there is no better time to finish this blog post.
I have asked a few Kosmos Innovation Center colleagues about their all-time top Ghanaian songs. Not favorite, but top. Like Most Popular Song of the Year (MPSY) category, but since the inception of Ghanaian music. My son Ebo likes Terminator by King Promise a lot. Wait, read that again. And again. Have you read the meaning into Terminator by King Promise? Leave a comment. This song by a short Ga boy named after a popular Commando movie (wait, likes Arnold Schwarzenegger paa o) won MPSY at the #TGMA25. Deserved. He lost out to Stonebwoy for Artiste of the Year. Right. Correct. BHIM Nation! "You are saying you would take me to Ashaiman if I don't start talking about the subject of the blog post?" Okay.
Here are the top 5 songs ever from Ghana. In my opinion. It is not humble though, because I know a lot about Ghanaian music. I used to go to the Ghana Music Awards for free, because I am a #GhanaMusic connoisseur. I run one of the most popular African music websites ever. Allow me to re-introduce myself. The website is called Museke.com, only that the website was shut down. I started focusing on other things. Basically, I know my stuff. Now, on to the music. Not in any particular order.
Woyaya (1971)
Did you know that OsibisaOsibisa had an album in the Billboard Hot 200 album chart in 1971? No Ghanaian musician has come close to that since Rawlings brought us back to democratic governance. Their self-titled Osibisa album was number 11 in the UK! That's such a massive feat.
We are going.... It will be hard we know
And the road will be muddy and rough
But we'll get there
Heaven knows how we will get there
We know we will!
This Woyaya song was the 11th most popular song in the UK at one time. Put some respect on its name.
Otoolege (2005)
I cannot say enough things about this song. Firstly, it ended some years of dominance of hiplife before the genre took over the Ghanaian music scene again. Personally, it is one of my favorite songs to sing in the shower, ever. Verbatim. That is how much I like the song.
I have blogged about Ofori Amponsah before. Keep reading thisKeep reading this.
Azonto (2012)
Uh huh. You have forgotten about this songthis song the way some Ghanaian music gurus and dancers have forgotten about the dance. Quote me. Showing that you can dance some form of azonto justifies your Ghanaian passport. I did not say PhD. The Dutch can't dance like we can in Ghana. You have to rep, hardYou have to rep, hard.
This song by Sarkodie is the Ghanaian song with the most YouTube views. One time for your mind.
You don't agree with this choice? Get some people together and take collection. Let's see how much money you would get. If you get GHC10000, you can shout Ha!
Kweku The Traveller (2022
Yes, a song does not need to be 5 years old to be an all-time hit. In my opinion, this groundbreaking track by Black Sherif is already there. Yes, it has its own Wikipedia pageWikipedia page.
I have travelled "Ghanaian music" since since. I effed up the list? You sure. Leave a comment to disagree or agree.
Honorable mentions would be mentioned later.
