13 Years of Active Citizenship: My Reflections on #NVDay2026 and How We Build the Ghana We Want
13 years ago today—on September 21, 2013—a small group of us at the GhanaThink Foundation executed an idea we had been discussing - around volunteerism . Ghana was navigating complex challenges, and everywhere we turned, young people were voicing legitimate frustration about the state of our communities, our roads, our healthcare, and our public spaces. But beneath that frustration lay an untapped reservoir of desire for real change. We asked ourselves a simple, radical question: What if we stopped waiting for someone else to come and fix our neighborhoods? What if we started solving problems right where we live, with whatever tools we already have? These questions gave birth to National Volunteer Day (NVDay) .
