Human Capital Development in Ghana, via Western Higher Education - #MightyAfrican Thoughts

Image
I always say: I am from Elmina , I grew up in Kumasi , I live in Accra , I care a lot about Ghana and I love Africa . But for a decade, I was living in the USA. Even then, I always say, I had one foot in Ghana all throughout. What took me there? What brought me back? What grazing in colder pastures? Where is your American accent? Let’s dig in, thanks to a conversation I had with Frank Bentum , on Ghanaian students choosing Western higher education and how this impacts human capital development in Ghana, with findings informing policy recommendations.  Motivations for Studying Abroad (Push Factors) My decision to study at MIT was primarily influenced by a role model , Arthur Musah. Arthur finished Presec in 1998, just before I entered the green grounds of Presec-Legon . He had emerged as the second best (WA)SSCE candidate in this year and he was being duly celebrated. I learnt that he had also played a major part of the Presec Drama Club. I looked up to him. In 2000, when I was...

Honouring Charlotte Akyeampong, my favorite teacher of all time

Image
One of the best years of my life was 2001 , the year I finished high school aka secondary school. I had so much freedom and chalked so many achievements. 1999 was one of the worst years of my life, this was the year I was a first year (Form 1) student at Presec . I was a labourer while being a student. Presec stands for Presby Boys' Secondary (High) School - Legon . In between the dates of being a Presec student and being within the walls of this great school, my favorite teacher was Charlotte Akyeampong . Mrs Akyeampong trumps all my teachers (for me), she is my favorite teacher of all time (and for some other Odadees too). 2018 is the year of Presec 's 80th anniversary. This is a great time to honour Mrs Akyeampong with a #MightyAfrican blog post. While I was in Form 1, I joined the Quiz Writers and Debaters Club . I was very passionate about trivia and general knowledge while in junior secondary school ( KNUST JSS ) so naturally, I joined this club of students wh...

Some top National Science and Maths Quiz (Ghana) contestants

Image
A friend +Nathan Kwadade  shared an  article  about the Top 15 National Science and Maths Quiz contestants with me earlier after this year's  National Science and Maths Quiz  (NSMQ) had ended. I  posted  it on Facebook and it generated a whole lot of chatter. Many people posted comments talking about other favorite contestants. Some came to share their credentials too. The comments on this Facebook  post actually drove me to write this blog post. Because you can find this blog post better than my Facebook post when you google the info you are looking for. There. You're welcome :-) Hisham Idris started us off with " Where is Bubune Adih of Mfsantsipim? He's arguably the most prominent contestant the show has seen. " It's hard to argue with him.  +Bubune Adih  actually participated in the NSMQ this year, not as a contestant, but as a speaker. He also donated GHC2000 to the best contestant for this year. Not doing badly at ...
