Tigo builds #Shelter4Education for 6 Ghanaian communities

A lot has been said about the quality of education in Ghana, especially in public schools. It's very important to create a nice environment for learning as bad conditions greatly affect the performance of students. "Schools under trees" is a popular topic when public school education is discussed in Ghana. These points lend more credence to the importance of Tigo's Shelter for Education initiative in Ghana which seeks to improve on infrastructure for basic education in rural Ghana. Tigo is the reigning Ghana Telecom Awards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Company of the Year . This is quite a big deal, given the constant competition amongst telecommunication companies in Ghana. Tigo launched its new CSR programme, Shelter 4 Education recently. Tigo has put up 6 six unit classroom blocks with Headmaster’s office, Staff common room and a KVIP for some selected schools in makeshift structures or in need of renovation across the country. The initiative wa...

Watching, guiding and aiding Takoradi's growth

Ghanaians have been giddy about the oil discovery on the Western shores of Ghana. Some are looking to work in the potential oil industry, while others are looking to do business around it. Some of the job expectations are unrealistic, people say. Some are skeptical how much money Ghana will really raise from the oil production and whether we might misuse it. The Western Region's traditional leaders want at least 10% of all oil revenue and many Ghanaians don't like that idea. One thing many Ghanaians agree on is the fact that places like Sekondi and Takoradi are not going to be the same. They are about to be transformed . If you read the news or have asked Takoradi residents, Takoradi is transforming. We should watch, guide and tailor this transformation in the absolute best interest of Ghana's development. It's tough to talk about Takoradi and not mention Sekondi . They are the Twin-cities. When we were planning the first Barcamp in the Western Region, we battled with...

The Africa they never show you - African cities

I've seen a couple of friends post this video on Facebook and I finally decided to watch it this week. I was impressed. I knew some African cities had some nice 'buildings' and all but this video was a little eye-opening. This is because it didn't show just Johannesburg, Nairobi and Abuja. It's the Africa they never show you in the media. It's the Africa Africans themselves never really see on their televisions as well. It's the Africa we don't talk enough about. It's not the real Africa, but it's a part of Africa. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13MFN0PqP3E When I first came to the USA in 2001, the big things were the big things that impressed me. The big buildings, large roads, highways, interchanges, etc. There are many differences between the US and Ghana, but I must say the skyscrapers and infrastructure takes the cake. I had thought of doing some form of engineering for undergrad, but the awe of the infrastructure wowed me and I settled on t...

Built African cities/capitals, is it possible in Ghana?

A few years back we had a discussion in the GhanaConscious community about potential new capitals for Ghana. Personally, I love Sunyani. It's in the middle of the country, if we ever had to go to war or something, it will be difficult to capture our fortress. Well, I have better reasons than this one, but I used to think this way lol. Sunyani is also very clean and planned for the most part. Why even think of a new capital? Because Nigeria built one in Abuja and it's really good. Neighbouring Ivory Coast has Yamoussoukro too which ain't bad. Here is a video of Abuja, Nigeria. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvGgMLmMvow Here is a bonus video detailing a Nigerian Ultra Modern Railway Network Project, estimated to take 25years to complete. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_QsDmtU2ms Olusegun Obasanjo did have some good ideas I see. It's not a crime to think big. At all. This Think BIG video showcases Ghanaians with big aspirations and big plans. It's a 28-minute documen...
