#KizombaThursday: How a Dance Craze Transformed Accra's Nightlife and Built Community

Image
I started liking Kizomba on Thursdays after I regularly went for the Kizomba nights at Afrikiko in Accra, Ghana . Since I liked using social media (especially Twitter) and hashtags in general, I started to use #KizombaThursday as a hashtag more often. I was going to say religiously, but Kizomba is not a religion. Or wait, is it? People consistently dancing and listening to Kizomba on Thursday is something that can be termed as being done religiously? Okay. Across social media, particularly through these enthusiastic posts, Thursday nights in Accra has continued to be synonymous with the smooth, sensual rhythms of Kizomba dancing—a weekly tradition that did more than teach dance steps. It has engendered a community as well. Cultural Fusion on the Dance Floor Kizomba , originating from Angola , has found an unexpected home in Ghana through these Thursday nights, etc. Kizomba is a national heritage of Angola and means "party" in Kimbundu . Waakye Wednesday Story

Image
Me and my people we eat waakye every Wednesday. Why? Because Y has a long tail. No, we did not mean that . But we really mean to eat waakye - on Wednesday - above every other meal. We have been waging a #WaakyeWednesday campaign since since. We ushered it in. Others joined. It is a thing. I mean, we would go through wrinkles to get this done. Search for the hashtag . Corporate companies, hospitality services have all joined in. Waakye is the best selling food in the whole wide web. Okay, the whole wide world. What? It is not true. Have you seen the waakye queues anywhere? Have you seen how it gets finished a few hours after the #waakyewherehouse starts selling it? Okay, make your points as comments. But you cannot disagree that we must eat well abi ? Here's a story that captures the essence of the brand. Published on a #WaakyeWednesday of course, after a #233moments post . This story is from many moons ago.  I went to drop off a friend at Legon just before #WaakyeWednes...

Let's volunteer in Ghana - #volunteeringh

Image
We at GhanaThink believe strongly in our mission: mobilize and organize talent for the primary benefit of Ghana and our vision: build a critical mass of patriotic, passionate, positive, proactive, progressive and productive young Ghanaians . Our mission is very broad so there are so many things we can do but we would only do what's easiest for us to succeed at given our state and situation  . We started GhanaThink with the spirit of volunteerism . To this day, GhanaThink is run by 100+  volunteer members and labour , including myself.  Volunteeringh opportunities with us exist for all Barcamps we organize. Aside the members, we normally have a group of volunteers per each local team,  and if we need more, we look for some. Currently, we normally get new volunteers through our community - Konnect , etc or people who we have noted who want to volunteer with us. Volunteerism is when people decide to help get something done to help others without being paid for it ....

We call +Barcamp Accra the Father Christmas of Barcamps. It normally happens on the Saturday before Christmas but the festive season is not the main driver behind this choice. It is to cater for allowing Ghanaians from all over the world to meet, those in Ghana and in the Diaspora. The Borgas have been arriving and we can see it in the Accra traffic. Or in the dollar-cedi rate? For 2 years, Barcamp Accra has not happened, due to covid and other reasons. Barcamp Accra is back on Saturday, December 17, 2022 ! Join a network of change-makers, doers, and entrepreneurs at an event where you can learn, share, network, and be mentored . If you cannot join in person, join us via the #bcaccra hashtag on social media! Barcamp Accra 2022 is a free networking event to bring people together for a day of learning, sharing, networking and mentoring. It is happening on Saturday, December 17 at the Volta Hall Dining Hall, Legon, Accra. The theme is around Finance, Personal development and Innovati...
