Many thanks for all the support you have all given my blog over the years, especially last year. I hope you enjoy the ride, get inspired, learn a few things, have a number of laughs and become an avid reader, and commenter, and sharer :-) I have been nominated for the Blogging and Social Media Awards organized by  +BloggingGhana . This is happening as part of their +BlogCamp Ghana  event. I am nominated for best male blogger - (Ato Ulzen-Appiah), best blog (mightyafrican.blogspot.com + +Mighty African ) and best Google+ profile (+AtoUlzenAppiah).  Kindly go to  www.blogcampghana.com/voting/  and vote massively for me to win. Major developments in the Ghanaian Tech Scene in 2013 - Part 2

Image
I was invited to host the #MomoAccra ( Mobile Monday ) end-of-year party at +233 Jazz Bar & Grill together with Dorothy Gordon, the Director-General at the KACE-AITI . The main organizer,  +Nana Fosu  directed me, to talk through some major developments that happened on the tech scene in Ghana. I loved the positive energy during the event and the positive news people left the venue with. A celebration of our achievements and accomplishments. Proof that we are succeeding and making things happen. Music to my ears. I led the discussion to bring out many things that happened in Ghana's tech industry this year. There's more to come, with an eye on the over-subscribed  +Barcamp Accra  happening on  December 23rd  at the  World Bank office , but let's recap some of what has happened in this year. Ghana had been crying for iHub type spaces and then after  +mFriday 's Tech Hub was launched last year, 2013 saw the launch and opening of 2 com...

Major developments in the Ghanaian Tech Scene in 2013 - Part 1

Image
Today at the #MomoAccra end-of-year party at +233 Jazz Bar & Grill,  +Nana Fosu  directed me, the host, to talk through some major developments that happened on the tech scene in Ghana. Lovely idea. A chance to celebrate accolades chalked, accomplishments met and good news lived. I haven't been as present on the tech scene in Ghana due to work commitments at  +Rancard  but I've followed many of what has happened. I led the discussion to bring out many things that happened in Ghana's tech industry this year. There's more to come, with an eye on the over-subscribed  +Barcamp Accra  happening on December 23rd at the World Bank office , but let's recap some of what has happened in this year. The Wireless Application Service Providers Association of Ghana (WASPAG) was formed to unify the voices of players in the tech (especially mobile) industry and help shape policy and regulate the industry. It's also to support local tech innovation. Companies th...

Watching a success story grow - Setriakor Kobla Nyomi

Image
The first time I heard of +kobla nyomi  was when he'd gone to participate in the Google Internship program in Zurich in 2010. For an Ashesi student, it's a regular occurrence for one to do an internship with a top-class company or institution for the summer, but this is Google we are talking about here. Kobla was one to watch . I'm not sure I met him in person until I was at Rancard. So now I've been watching him . Late last month, he won the MTN Apps Challenge in Ghana, picking up a cool GHC 10,000 and a trip to San Francisco. Are you going to have a watch on him now? :-) Sometime this year, when I was thinking through cool Ghanaian apps and technologies, I remembered that Kobla Nyomi had built an Oware computer game. It was a 3D app and on Android too. I googled for info on it and found very little, apart from this Ashesi.edu post and another. So I asked him, " What happened to the app? " He said something like " Oh, I haven't really touched ...

It's 23:33pm on 23-3! #233moments #blogcamp13

Image
I didn't wake up remembering that today was 23-3. I knew it was 23rd March, the day of Blogcamp Ghana 2013 aka #blogcamp13 . But did I remember that the date itself was 23-3-2013? As in, 23rd day of the 3 month? Nah. But do you get it? Today was 23-3 . That's like the perfect day to signify the number 233 , which is Ghana's number. I guess every 23rd March is gonna occupy a special place in my heart. The #233moments posts at 2:33pm on every 23rd March will be that extra special. But like I said, today was the day many bloggers and social media enthusiasts gathered at Blogcamp. But boy, was it an interesting day! I had been approached by a Presec mate during the week to do some lessons on how to use social media to some people taking a professional course on this day. I told him I couldn't do it because I would be at Blog Camp and that everyone I knew who could do this would be there too. If you could do this, but weren't gonna be at BlogCamp if you were ava...

Ghana National Youth Achievers Awards 2012 - The Winners

Image
The very first  Ghana National Youth Achievers Awards (NYAA)  were held under the auspices of President John Dramani Mahama on October 25 this year. Congratulations to all the winners, some of which I am proud to know personally. I already reacted to the whole NYAA, but let's dig into the winners proper. Because just giving you the list is boring. If you wanna learn some more, say #morevim! Sarkodie and Becca won for Music. BET Award wins, Channel O nominations, Museke Awards wins, they deserved it. Jackie Appiah won for Performing Arts, she's not the fairest Ghanaian, so she must be doing very well as an actress because of her acting skills :-p. She's still cute too, those IPMC billboards do her some good justice. Jackie's best ever casting was in The Perfect Picture , arguably one of Ghana's best ever movies. The director of that movie, Shirley Frimpong-Manso won for film.  The Fashion winner is surprising as it is refreshing, Fred Deegbe's Heel the...

Ghana's National Youth Achievers' Awards - The Reaction

Image
The manner in which I first heard about the Ghana National Youth Achievers Awards (NYAA) were  some interesting circumstances. First, they was the notion that some of the organizers behind it should not have been behind it or should have been supporting something else that I support. And then my mother also called me about it saying my aunt was encouraging me to apply. The Awards were held recently and many deserving people that I know of won but I never ended up applying. But the latter part is not the point, the former - celebrating Ghanaian youth achievement is the point of this blog post. But I still have to tell you why I didn't apply. First, I wasn't excited by the involvement of CharterHouse (which organizes entertainment type awards shows, what would that mean for these awards?) and RLG (who as a tech company is not exactly supporting innovation in Ghana like it should, yeah I said it). And then you have the government angle, endorsed by the sitting president, Joh...

One of Museke's proudest moments! DR Congo crooner Fally Ipupa , Senegal’s Viviane Ndour and Didier Awadi were the top winners at the 2011 Afrotainment Museke Online African Music Awards that took place on September 24 in New York City. Afrotainment’s studios were given a makeover in preparation for the event that will certainly have left a great impression on all involved. Benin’s very own Angelique Kidjo , gave an impromptu acapella performance following her acceptance of her award. Kidjo was recipient of the Afrotainment MOAMA 2011’s Lifetime Achievement Award - her first ever, which she said she was glad that it was an award bestowed upon her by fellow Africans. The show was hosted by Afrotainment presenters, Zimbabwe’s Farai Gundan - who was dressed by Nigerian haute couture designer Alphadi - and Zambia’s Tivo Shikapwashya . The red carpet ceremony was h...
