The Top Nigerian Songs of All-Time - Starting Eleven

Image
I asked my Nigerian  friends to name their  top 5 songs  ever, from  Nigeria . My Nigerian alter-ego,  Ayooluwaato Eze , also contributed, thanks to all he has learnt around  Museke . I also asked  Google  Gemini (yes, not Meta AI, Chat GPT, Grok, Deepseek, or POE - because, I asked it through Google Sheets). You know it is my friend these days right? I also contributed my top 5, while reminiscing this  list from 2009 . My first time in  Nigeria  was in 2011. But prior to that, I had been hearing a lot of Nigerian music (not like circa 2011 though) on Ghanaian TV. I did not even have to learn too much from my  Nigerian friends  at  MIT . I got to know much more about Nigerian music when me,  Edward Mabonga  and others started  Museke  in 2006. It was great to see some of my friends suggest songs that we were jamming to back in the day. I wanted to do a list of top 5, but there are too many son...

Learning more about Lagos, the state of

Image
I had gone to, or err... travelled to, Ikeja from VI and upon arrival, I was seeing all these "Welcome to Lagos" signboards. So I wondered and then it finally dawned on me that Lagos was actually a state. We know it as the biggest city in Africa, but Lagos is also the name of a state . Did you know Ikeja was the capital of Lagos State? I didn't know until this week, my fifth time in Lagos. I am beginning to know more about Lagos. Ayooluwaato Eze is becoming more comfortable with his true home . While in Lagos, a friend took me on a small driveby tour of Ikeja. I had been to Ikeja a couple of times before, once to go chill and party when I had " point and kill " for the first time. The second time, I visited the Shrine . I need to go check out Computer Village the next time though. In Ikeja, we drove past the Ikeja mall which had a Shoprite and looked pretty big, bigger than the Accra Mall. We'd see what West Hills Mall does when it arrives. The Lago...

Wa-zo-bia to Lagos!

I was in Lagos earlier this week for the third time this year. This time, I could clearly tell when I was on the 3rd mainland bridge, when I had gotten into VI versus Ikoyi, etc. Almost every single time I was going somewhere, I was not in heavy traffic. I planned it really well. NOT. It just happened. I didn't parade around as Ayooluwaato Eze but I was interested in the subjects I tweeted about and will talk through in this blog post. The first night I had gone to Man of Steel in 3D which was a blog worthy experience . After spending some time at the Rancard office, I had to go to Ikeja for some meeting like that. After bargaining a price of 2000 Naira, we set off. Enjoying the non-existent traffic on Oworoshoki highway in #Lagos to #Ikeja . We jos dey go. Now, the taxi driver is showing me bus stops. — Mighty African (@mightyafrican) July 16, 2013 Did you hear about the Nigerian traffic app (Traffix) that's looking to get bought by Google ? Got to love their vim. T...

Watching Man Of Steel in 3D in Las Gidi

While in Nairobi last month, I learnt about the opportunity to watch the Man of Steel movie in 3D . I had never seen a movie in 3D for almost 2 years, since I returned home from the US. The Man of Steel 3D experience was oversubscribed. A friend had gone to watch an earlier screening and the cinema area was packed. Turned out it wouldn't be that easy to get a ticket. Went bowling the next Nairobi day and then left for Accra. So being in Lagos with the same opportunity? I was leaving no stone unturned. Glad I did. I am blogging about it hehe. So aren't you too ? Do Nigerian movie theatres start showing movies later like their flights do? Cos I really wanna watch Man of steel 3D tonight. #lagos — Mighty African (@mightyafrican) July 15, 2013 Give me 3D cinema even if I've 2 miss 23.4 minutes of a 149 minute movie. Off to Genesis Deluxe Cinemas in lekki, #Lagos . #leggo #manofsteel — Mighty African (@mightyafrican) July 15, 2013 First, arriving in Lagos later tha...

Ayooluwaato Eze throws some light on Nigeria

Me, Ayooluwaato Eze , am taking over the MIghTy African's blog to give you a fresh voice. The MIghTy African hasn't talked about Nigeria on this blog much and after I pushed him, this Lagos experiences blog post happened. But let me take you into Naija proper by a proper Anago man. Because na we be the Giant of Africa! You no hear say Super Eagles don win African Cup? If not, you don hear wien ! While Naija looks forward to the Confederations Cup, others are wondering why their Black Stars have failed to win a major trophy in his lifetime. Anyway, this na Naija time, so make una listen. Naija is as crazy about soccer as Ghana is. Many Nigerians are Chelsea fans which is easy to say, dating back to the years that Celestine Babayaro and Taribo West played for the Blues. Today, John Mikel Obi makes a living at Stamford Bridge while Victor Moses is earning his living at Chelsea too. Why, wetin I say? Mikel for score goal give Chelsea. In fact, he for leave go anoth...

(Some) MIghTy African experiences from Lagos

I've been to Lagos 3 times in the last 15 months. But I haven't told you that on this blog. You know how Ghana and Nigeria are, it's a sibling rivalry in every sense of the word. I would say " Nigeria is Ghana's small brother who has many more children ". Ato Eze would say "Nigeria is the oga in the neighbourhood". I first went to Las Gidi in December 7-9 2011, March 14-18 2012 and February 19-22 2013. Many things happened there but these are the juiciest stories. When I first went to Lagos, I was looking forward to experiencing too many Lagos parties. "Ain't no party like a Lagos party,  cos when Lagos party, we bother nobody" . Let's say in all my nights there, I am yet to experience a Lagos party that will allow Ato Eze to have a good debate with Richard Nshuti Mayanja on Lagos being a better party city than Kampala is. My Naija people will say I have not been hanging with the right people. Well, if I have to know the righ...

My Nigerian alter-ego

Image
At different times in my life, people meet me and say I look Nigerian. They say I look Igbo, sorry my Yoruba brethren and Hausa sistren. I didn't choose that and personally I don't like Igbos more than other Naija tribes. So, I play along and claim that I am actually Nigerian. Of course, you all know I am a Ghanaian. If you didn't, now you know. Especially when I meet some new Nigerians, I 'lie' and say I am Nigerian and my name is ..... I used to say Oluwadeyoato. Apparently, it doesn't make much sense, so I consulted with some Nigerian friends to come up with a new one. This is what we settled on - Ayooluwaato Eze. Yes, my Naija alter ego has a last name too. And I am from Kwara State . :-) Before I tell you about me, let me tell you a funny story. When attending the local Nigeriaat50 party, I was with a Naija girl and we met some of her friends. I introduced myself as Oluwadeyoato to them. I said I was from Kwara state. I was wearing green. Gotto rep my cou...
