Marriage & Dating Advice around the #KonnectKouch

Image
Am I marriage counsellor? No. Hehe. The  Konnect Kouch  is a version of hot seat  in Konnect Groups for its members (run by the  GhanaThink Foundation . We normally ask a lot of questions to the kouchee, some are quite personal. I have leveraged some Q&A from being on the #GhanaThink & then #SunyaniKonnect kouches to talk about some thoughts I have about dating, marriage, etc.  Mildred Adeaba is the Barcamp Accra Resources Lead. I first got to know her through Barcamp Takoradi . She has become #ModeratorMildred . She asked the 2.33 million cedi question on Konnect Kouches : Are you single, dating or married? If you are dating or married, how did you meet your partner? What do you look for in a partner to date? Here's what I typed. I'm married to Tracy Ulzen-Appiah (nee Asare). We got married on my birthday, December 31, 2016. I met her on July 24, 2009 through my cousin Jamie somewhere in Maryland (aka Maryland). Not Virginia o (Virgin land)  I ...

Traits of a good wife according to my mother

Image
I love my mother . She's so caring. In fact, she takes caring to a whole new other level. But I guess that's what mothers do. Caring might just be the most important thing when it comes to being a mother. But is it the most important thing when it comes to being a wife? Yeah, are you asking me why I didn't write - " But is it the most important thing when it comes to being a husband? "? Well, I am not looking for a husband. It's a wife I am looking for. A life partner . I was pretty sure my mum would know a thing or two about who would make a good wife. So I asked her . I didn't just get up and ask her. We had one of those ' how is your girlfriend - are you guys fine - when are you getting married ' type conversations. My answer to her is not as important as the next few things you are going to read. If you are a guy and you are married already, good for you. Maybe this would help. If you are  a guy and you are yet to marry, I pray this is ...

Xoxo, which of the X's and O's be hugs and kisses?

Image
I don't exactly remember the first time someone told me " xoxo ". I do know who has used it in conversation with me the most though, one of my best friends. She's Francophone and from what I have come to know about Francophone women, things that some of us think are a bit 'romantic' like kissing on cheeks, they see as more 'platonic'. If you've not seen it in action, you are obviously missing out. Anyway, for a long time, I knew ' xoxo ' stood for hugs and kisses . But what are the X's and O's ? Sorry, as much as I would have enjoyed that too, we are not really talking about x's and o's , that of the basketball court. We are not talking tactics to winning games here, but don't you be thinking these ' hugs and kisses ' are tactics towards winning some lady's heart. It's a rather harmless greeting that is rather endearing. So you can use it as such. " Talk to you later. Xoxo, Ato ". But does...

Relationship challenges - issues in Sinking Sands movie

' Sinking Sands ' follows ' I Sing Of A Well ' (ISOAW), from the stable of director, Leila Djansi from Ghana. I had been really excited about this movie with the casting of Haiti's Jimmy Jean-Louis and Ama Abrebrese. After watching Sinking Sands, I had one word. Unique. It was unlike any Ghanaian movie I had ever seen. And that's the major reason why you should see it. I already wrote a movie review but in this post , I want to talk about some of the issues the movie raises. The movie also reminds me of a great blog post my friend wrote about relationships. How much of one's dreams and wants must one sacrifice to be in a serious relationship? Do we lose ourselves by becoming 'attached'? Do we have to sacrifice our own happiness and does happiness take a new meaning? Do partners take out their frustrations (whether borne from inside the home or out of it) on each other? Obviously, they share the good times as well. Does the Ghanaian society consider ...

Turning Point Pictures' Sinking Sands - a movie review

Image
After watching 'I Sing Of A Well' (ISOAW), loving it and writing a review , I eagerly anticipated the next movie from Leila Djansi's stable. I also interviewed her about ISOAW and when Sinking Sands was being made ready for its Ghana premiere, I was offered the chance to preview Leila's 'Sinking Sands'. I had been really excited about this movie with the casting of Haiti's Jimmy Jean-Louis and Ama Abrebrese. After watching Sinking Sands, I had one word. Unique. It was unlike any Ghanaian movie I had ever seen. And that's the major reason why you should see it. The movie centers around domestic abuse but this only comes about because some changes come in the relationship between Gyimah (Jimmy's character) and Pabi (Ama's character). I think Jimmy does well in his African movie debut. Well, unless you want to count Phat Girlz (which featured Moqniue Parker) as the debut. It wasn't too difficult for him to fit in as his Haitian accent is not a...

I watched "Diary of a tired black man"

Bond. James Bond. I have always been fascinated with Bond movies and the character and personality of Bond. He looks like a pretty cool guy. There's a new Bond movie out and I had the chance to see it yesterday for like 3 dollars. I shunned that opportunity to watch another movie/documentary. Why not? I was going to watch this documentary for free, and as some of you may know, I've been on a 'spending-nothing' spree for some time now. The documentary I ended up watching was called ' The Diary of a Tired Black Man '. Yes, it does sound like 'the Diary of a Mad Black Woman'. This film/documentary supposedly is an answer to its sister of a similar name. But what are Black men tired about? Why should we be tired? We just elected a Black man as president. Nothing should tire us out from achieving our goals, dreams, aspirations or desires. According to this documentary, some things that happen to Black men do tire them out. Let's find out. http://www.yout...
