Google Map Directions in Accra! :-)

My friend Paa Kwesi Imbeah sent me this link just now. When I opened it and saw it, I had to blog it. It was directions on Google Maps from from: 10th Street, Accra (Buka Restaurant) to: Kotoka International Airport, Box Ka PMB 36, Kotoka International Airport, Accra (Dgaa). Awesome huh?

1. Head northwest on 10th St toward 3rd St - 71 m
2. Take the 1st right onto 3rd St - 300 m
3. Turn right at Ring Rd E - 140 m
4. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Cantoment Rd - 1.2 km
5. At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Cantonments Rd - 600 m
6. Turn left at Second Circular Rd - 900 m
7. Take the 2nd right onto Giffard Rd - 1.5 km
8. Turn left - 350 m
9. Slight left toward Burma Camp Main Rd - 1.3 km

Unfortunately it does miss out "important" landmarks like the Total station, the hairdresser, the lady selling kose, and other similar places, but we do have to progress... The other challenge is actually knowing the names of streets! LOL

I forgot to ask PK about this but he lent me his phone for a day and I was driving around and the phone would always show my location on the screen! Like at one point it said "atomic junction", then it said "legon". I thought it was pretty nifty and meant to ask but never got around to it

true @ Nina, knowing the streets is a challenge but I think we r doing a good job putting up signs saying which streets we'reon.

the road signs being put up will be duely stolen for scrap. writing the names of the streets and their heading literally on the street i think will help. that way people will even notice and unconsciously learn the street names. This street naming thing has the potential to help our economy in soooo many ways but itd not taken seriously.

hmm, bold prediction there, Sanders. I've seen many road signs in Kumasi and they haven't been stolen yet.

Your suggestion is great too, we should definitely wage a campaign for people to learn the street names

Learnt how to say "Thank You" in 23 African languages

Today, I learnt how to say "Thank You" in yet another African language. So let me take a stab at seeing if I can say "Merci" in 23 African languages. And let's share some small attendant info. :-) Akan: Medaase . What you thought I wouldn't add my mother tongue? Some folks can't say what "thank you" is in their lingua francas. Such a fracas. Don't belittle this at all at all. Ga: Oyiwaladonn . I don't remember when I learnt this but I do know I learnt to say "Nnuu Ga" (I can't speak Ga) during the time I came to Accra to represent KNUST JSS in Kiddie Quiz and me and my Kumasi-living mates were testing our Ga knowledge. Ewe: Akpe . I love saying "Akpe kakaa" and I am not sure why. Dagbani: Ti pagi da . Yeap, Jemila Abdulai taught me this one. Thrice. You can also say Mpagya . Hausa: Na gode . Learnt how to say "What is your name" & "My name is" in 23 African languages

Depending on which country I am in and who I am speaking to, I can have 1 out of about 7 names. You probably know my real one, but you do know my Ugandan , Kenyan , Nigerian , Ethiopian , Tanzanian and South African ones? Or my real other name which I use to call myself when I meet some lucky lady I feel like saying it to? Just in case, you happen to be in certain place or country and you feel you have to pull one of these out, let's learn how to say " What is your name " and " My name is " in 23 African languages. :-) Thanks to my friends who helped me pull this list together recently as I had missed writing blog posts such as these. Akan: Wo din de s É› n?   Me din de .. Yeah, name in Twi is "din".
